eyes for you

today was Fathers Day in
Honduras.
so we celebrated.
of course!!!
we took the guys out for pizza
i loved the reflection in jeanettes
sunglasses.

later i noticed don in there!
so appropriate i thought.
love still in her eyes for him.

we had such a wonderful time together
laughing, telling stories, affirming the guys
(that is a tradition for our family to say what we appreciate
about the person
for either fathers day, mothers day or any birthday
it is a tradition worth expressing i think.

who needs word of affirmation in your world?
give them
give them
give them again!

here is the whole lot of us

rent a tux?

it looks like a black tie event
but
nope
a place that sells tuxedos?
nope

it is our r.e.c.o building
roatan electric company
not sure why the black tie is over the door
must be someone's idea of a decoration i guess

but believe me there isn't anything fancy
about going in there
well i take that back
the prices are fancy!!

electricity on the island is super expensive.
it was one of the most surprising things about living here i'd say

they just got new generators and we are grateful for that
because now we have very few power outages.
we used to get 2 - 3 a week.
i remember last year the power being out for 3 days!
that was terrible.
now they are usually out for just a few hours

it looks like a tuxedo doesn't it?
but no one here wears a tux!
just can't afford it with those crazy electricity bills!!

will the real irish please stand up?

went to the oasis tonight to celebrate
st. patrick's day.
it was packed.

everyone was dressed in green,
some wore feather boas,
tall funny hats,
head bands with jiggly, sparkly shamrocks,
tshirts with some type of irish slogan
"kiss me i am irish"

my friend was there and i said,
hey why didn't you dress up?
"i don't need to dress up to be irish.
i am irish.
i am the real deal
the rest of plastic paddy's!"

so here is pauline,
the real deal
a wonderful irish girl who lives on the island for the past 8 years
volunteering self lessly at the clinic
throwing great dinner parties,
the life of the party.
a heart that is truly made of gold.

today she quizzed me so i will quiz you for the fun of it
what is the irish symbol?
i said lion.
she sighed and said the shamrock!
duh!
did you know that it stands for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
i didn't.
what are the colors of the irish flag?
green? umm...
green, white and gold.
not orange.
it is gold.
what does this mean in gaelic?
pog mo thoin!!!
(kiss my ***)
i hate to close on that note so i will leave you with a lovely irish
blessing

May the blessing of light be on you—
light without and light within.

May the blessed sunlight shine on you
and warm your heart...
till it glows like a great peat fire. "

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

oh by the way, the guy in the green is from Dublin too!
the rest of us were wannebes!

twinkle toes

i love how i never know what each day will hold here
i had a spontaneous photo shoot with the little girl
next door.
her mom had bought a new dress, hat and purse
and she asked if i would take a photo
'for grama in holland'

in a culture where most people here can
barely afford food
the mother was thrilled to have found this dress
second hand for such a good price.

also in a culture where most people here can
barely afford food
i did the shoot pro bono.
or does that just apply to lawyers?

rebecca.
beautiful

shy

happy

free!!!

at rest

i am not sure what type of hummingbird this is
does anyone know.
it is exceptionally large with a
curved beak
totally green with a blue chest and the tail feathers
underneath are a rust red.
i thought at first this one was roosting on a nest
but once i zoomed in i saw it was just sitting
on a branch.
(he was about 25 ft away)
i would love to have a nesting hummer near by.

for those who have been following our time in roatan
i think mr. fluffybutt showed up today.
he is small, sold green and very friendly.
one came and sat on the branch and i called out
hey mr. fluffybutt is that you?
and he flew directly to my face
and then flew away.

emily was out there at the time
and she laughed and laughed
saying 'do you think it is your bird?'
i said i do.

then emily said
mom are you going to cry?
i did.
tears of joy.
i hope he comes back
because he was so friendly.
